Enjoy a very rare insight into the world of professional AFL in the 1990s and life on the World Stand Up Paddle Surf Tour with Dave Muir. Dave shares his journey through the ranks from Claremont Colts through to playing for the Fremantle Dockers in their first two years. He then tells how 10 years later he got another chance at top flight competition with an invitation to a Stand-Up World Contender Tour competition where he placed 2nd. Since then he has been one of the longest competing riders and surfed locations including Teahupo’o in Tahiti (where he won) and Sunset in Hawaii. You can’t help but be drawn in by this larger than life, laid back, proud West Aussie who has a massive heart and an amazingly grateful outlook on the opportunities that life has presented him. There is much to learn from appreciating and capitalising on every opportunity you get.

#58 Josh Richards – Going to Mars

Speaker, author, troublemaker Josh Richards shares his journey and mindset to become one of a 100 astronaut candidates short listed from 200,000 for the Mars One project that proposes to land the first humans on Mars in a one-way journey. Josh talks about how his childhood and time in the Army shaped him for where he is now, his decision making behind applying to Mars One, the recruitment process and how the mission would shift human consciousness. In what is the most extreme detachment – from family, friends and planet - he goes deep on how reconciling his decision has focused his everyday life, relationships and state of being to new levels. Josh’s focus and outlook are impressive and infectious, his perspective beyond himself are truly admirable and impressive. You don’t have to have to sign up for a one-way journey to Mars to learn many many lessons from this conversation that you can use in your everyday life to ‘amplify the colour in it’.

Paul Shanahan and James Best share how they set about taking action to create Future Bayswater – an award-winning community group focused on shaping the future prosperity of the Bayswater town centre. They explain how after facing the realisation that Bayswater was going nowhere and none in authority had any real plans for its development, that it fell to them to look beyond themselves, bravely step up, leave their comfort zone and take action to do something even though it would lead significant backlash and criticism in the process. Paul and James have now created a movement and mobilised a community. Through education and engagement, they seek public permission and inclusion to shape the future of Bayswater by putting the public voice to Government and business alike – they’ve also enjoyed a few beers along the way!! These guys epitomise the WA Real ethos of taking responsibility and making yourself accountable irrespective of the scale of the resistance that may come your way in doing so.

 

#56 Brodie McCulloch – A space to evolve in

Brodie McCulloch, Founder and Managing Director of Spacecubed, shares the journey behind creating the home to an established community of small businesses and entrepreneurs on St George’s Terrace in Perth. With the average person facing retraining for a new career every 5 years, Brodie and his team have created the physical space and support infrastructure for people to evolve their skills and talents to meet the future needs. Brodie goes deep on the ‘Future of Work’ topic, how Spacecubed is playing its part to encourage wider business growth beyond the resources sector in WA as well as his observations of what ‘inner skills’ a potentially successful entrepreneur needs.
